The University of Kerala was founded in 1937 by Sri Chithira Thirunal Balaram Varma, Maharaja of Travancore. Kerala University is the 16th university in India. 

In 1976, the Kerala University Distance Education Courses established the Department of Education and Research, becoming the first distance education institution in the state. The Institute of Distance Education is located at the Kariavattom Campus of the University of Kerala, Trivandrum.
